Don’t Let Your Wedding be “Training Day”

Wenning's Wedding Tip Wednesday

As you prepare to book vendors for your upcoming big day be sure that you are delegating tasks to the proper people. You may be considering some DIY projects for your centerpieces or bouquets, but would you consider using the DIY method on some of the most important parts of your wedding? While most of you would say no, that is exactly what you are doing if you choose to have a hobbyist be the main entertainer, photographer, or videographer at your wedding. A hobbyist is just that, someone that has a 9-5 job and is only concerned with your event after they have worked their 40 hours. Your event may not be a priority for this person because, realistically, this is not their main source of income.

We cannot stress enough that you DO NOT want to relay on anything less than a professional for things like your DJ, photos and video! These are some of the most memorable aspects of every wedding day. Would it be worth it to save a few hundred dollars on your DJ, but have no one dancing during the evening or even worse, he plays the wrong song for your first dance?! Unmet expectations, aggravation and frustration. This is what you get when you hire a hobbyist. Yes, they come at a lower price, but as the old adage goes, “you get what you pay for”. Do they offer a back up plan? Liability insurance? A contract? Ideally, this person is still a student. They probably have not done enough events or gone through any professional training to master their skill and guide you through your wedding day with ease and comfort. Who wants the student to run the show when the teacher is better! We aren’t saying that you shouldn’t find ways to save money during wedding planning. Just be mindful of where you cut corners because it could cost you more in the end if your vendor is a no show or does a poor job.
